Sorghum and Sudan Forage Variety Trials

In an effort to assist producers with summer annual forage selection, the Agricultural Division has conducted forage yield trials to determine hay yields of commercially available varieties of forage sorghum, sorghum sudan crosses and sudan grass. This report summarizes results from the 2010 rain-fed and irrigated trials.

Jim Johnson serves as a senior soils and crops consultant at Noble Research Institute, where he has worked since 1999. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in soil science from the University of Illinois and a master’s degree in agronomy from Oklahoma State University, he worked in various plant breeding programs in Nebraska, Texas and Oklahoma. His interests are cover crops and soil health.

Shawn Norton grew up on a family farm in the rural southwest Oklahoma community of Mangum. He received his bachelor’s degree in plant and soil sciences from Oklahoma State University in 1998 and has been a Certified Crop Adviser since 2010.
